It’s finally summer (yayy!), but for most of us this is no longer a time when we can just lay around the house or play outside all day. We all have jobs, internships, summer classes, or even just daily chores and errands which require our attention and time. This just means that it’s even more important to stay productive during this happy season- the faster you can get your work done the more you can enjoy the golden summertime! The choice to be productive starts first thing in the morning so here are some tricks I use to start my day off right:

  1. Set your alarm clock 15 minutes early.

Those extra 15 minutes to lay in bed allow you to think about your upcoming day, scroll through your social media or the news, and even stretch a little bit to get your blood flowing. I know that when I wake up, no matter what the time is, I’ll always check my phone for at least a few minutes which means that if I don’t wake up a little early my day is already running behind! It gives you a little bit of buffer time so that, when it’s really time to get up, you’re ready to get moving and begin the rest of your morning routine.

  1. Begin your day by reading an inspirational quote or devotional.

It’s always nice to give yourself a little motivation boost before you start your day. When you wake up, take 5 minutes to read something that inspires you. I love being able to pick a quote or passage that energizes me and can give me direction for my day. Here are some of my favorites:

“Good morning is not just a word, its an action and a belief to live the entire day well. Morning is the time when you set the tone for the rest of the day. Set it right!” –Fain Blake

“Be somebody who makes everybody feel like a somebody.” –Robby Novak

“You’ve got to get up every morning with determination if you’re going to go to bed with satisfaction.” –George Lorimer

“If you can’t find the sunshine, be the sunshine.”

By reading motivational passages or quotations) I am reminded that, although I put so much pressure on what seems like an endless to-do list, my daily priority should be to live out the values that are so important to me. This allows me to start my day with love, kindness, and positivity!

  1. Move around and get your blood flowing.

This doesn’t mean you have to go to the gym every morning- just take a few minutes to do some jumping jacks or stretch when you get out of bed. By getting up and moving around your body knows that it is time to start the day. I do this every morning and you would be amazed at how energized and awake you feel after a little activity!

  1. Drink a glass of water.

This one is a biggie. You wouldn’t go 8 hours without drinking anything during the day so you shouldn’t do it after sleeping for 8 hours. By drinking a glass of water when you wake up you’ll rehydrate your body, boost your metabolism, and it will help you to stay full longer after breakfast.

  1. Make a to-do list for the day.

Take 5-10 minutes to think about the day you have coming up and organize the tasks you have into a to-do list. This will ensure that you don’t forget any of your tasks and seeing an outline of your goals for the day is great motivation for productivity. I write a list every morning and pick out some cute stationary for the day- this makes the process more fun and helps me resent any unwanted tasks a little less. I promise you- nothing feels more satisfying than being able to cross an item off your list!

Give these tips a try and let me know how it goes! Happy summer everybody!
